Dear Pastor and congregation,
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. February 19th, 1979, 23 years ago today was a historic day in my life when I left Beirut, Lebanon for Brussels, Belgium as a financial accounting expatriate for 3M company. There I joined Tommy Duniho's church where the Lord Jesus called me out of the secular world into the ministry.
Back to pick up where we left you in the last progress report. Christmas came along and we decided to have a Christmas gathering for all of the families that have attended at least once or have been attending our services regularly for the last six months. We were flabbergasted by the turn out. We had 17 families and 3 individuals show up for a wonderful gathering. I had prayed that a spiritual atmosphere would dominate the entire evening, and that is exactly what happened. We had singing and preaching and a Bible knowledge test. We had 5 people pray and trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior and we had 5 Christians stirred up and dedicate their lives to the Lord Jesus. We lived by the joy of the blessings of that evening for a whole month.
We are already under way in the New Year. We have had 4 people saved in the last 7 weeks, which is almost unreal. Our daughter, Kristi, has been witnessing to her classmates and out of the blue sky one of their parents sent a slip of paper that had their home and a cell phone numbers written. I called and his father said that he didn't mind if we picked up his children for Sunday School. He was surprised to hear me say that I did mind, in that he needed to come and hear as well; and they have been coming without interruption since then. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
Now we want to share with you the burden of our hearts. Next Summer we are coming to the United States on our third furlough. The first was in 1989, the second in 1995, and now the third in 2002 the Lord's willing. This is going to be a crucial time for many reasons. It will be a time of rest for us. It will be a time when we will refresh our support. It will be a time when we will raise funds for the new term to come. And finally, it will be a time when Ruth, George and Peter will apply for their naturalization papers. If God grants us these goals to get accomplished we will be making a dynamic move towards the rest of our years on the field if the Lord Jesus tarries.
If you want us to be with you at any particular time after August 1st, 2002, please e-mail us. We honestly ask for your faithful prayers for the reasons mentioned above. But a more important prayer is for my people back here in Jerusalem. Considering the options I have in front of me with no man to assist me, I have only one healthy option to undertake. It is to temporarily entrust my flock to the senior pastor of the church I had attempted to merge with two years ago. He is straightforward doctrinally and that covers up for his eccentricities, and most importantly he has an excellent testimony.
Also, please pray for our safety and for the safety of our flock here in Jerusalem. The level of danger that we are living in is to the point that at times it is even dangerous to go outdoors. Jerusalem has become hysterical with the recent wave of even women terrorists blowing their own selves up. With human bombs walking down the streets, people are vanishing from them, and so are we! Sometimes it is dangerous to shop for our basic needs. Three days ago I went shopping at a large discount drug store and the atmosphere was so tense that the pedestrians and cars scarcely had the nerve to stop and wait at the traffic lights.
